Kat Yates is a contemporary Australian artist based in Toowoomba, Queensland. Her work centres on expressive, character-driven portraiture that explores emotion, identity and the complexity of human experience.
Working intuitively, Kat builds layered compositions using bold line, colour and texture. Her figures sit between abstraction and representation, allowing personality and mood to emerge through distortion, exaggeration and unexpected detail. Recurring elements and symbolic forms create a visual language that is both playful and psychologically engaging.
Her practice is informed by close observation of people and behaviour, with a particular interest in vulnerability, resilience and connection. Each work invites the viewer to pause and recognise something of themselves within the character.
Kat holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Toowoomba. This formal training has supported the development of her distinctive style, combining conceptual understanding with an intuitive, expressive approach to making.
Her work is available through her studio, Kathouse Art.
